Omichka was drawn in Pool A together with last year’s silver medalists Rabita BAKU of Azerbaijan, Germany’s DRESDNER SC and another rookie, France’s BEZIERS Volley. They will debut in Baku, a city where the “cats” as they are nicknamed in Russia have played four times in the past three seasons.
Omichka OMSK REGION achieved the greatest results in their history this past year as they made it to the semis of the CEV Volleyball Cup and claimed bronze in the Russian Superleague there by getting the right to participate in the CEV Volleyball Champions League. Some players who did chiefly contribute to these outstanding results – Natalya Mammadova, Victoria Kuzyakina, Alena Yurieva, Olga Fateeva and Ekaterina Orlova – have decided to stay in Omsk also for the coming season while five have moved away from the club. However, Omichka strengthened the group by signing setter Marina Babeshina (Sheshenina), a 2006 world champion with the Russian national team, and Cuban star Nancy Carrillo.
“We are happy with the outcome of the DOL” says Organizing Director Yaroslav Vorozhko. “The CEV Volleyball Champions League is Europe’s elite Volleyball competition and you can’t expect to get any weak teams even in the prelims. Of course Rabita is the pre-favorite of the group as they have very experienced players and a very solid roster. However, I think that Rabita’s presence in the group will make the competition even more interesting. We will prepare very carefully and do our best to advance to the Playoffs”.
Omichka will have a busy season: next to the CEV Volleyball Champions League the club is set to participate also in the Russian Superleague, Russian Cup and in the Cup of Siberia.
