“I had a couple of difficult seasons due to injury,” he says. “However, I am now ready to help our national team. I think we have the right quality to perform well and most important is that we are preparing very well for the start of the World League. I am confident that we can make the Final Tournament in Florence. Of course it won’t be easy but I know we can play at eye level with every opponent and time has come for Serbia to be back on the podium,” he adds.
Serbia will start their campaign in late May with two home matches versus Russia in a group that also includes Bulgaria and USA.
Starović was one of the youngest players back in 2010 when Serbia medaled for the last time but now there are many more young guys around who are ready to play a major role for the national team.
“This is quite normal,” Starović says. “Every year one or two players are added to the World League roster. I am not as experienced as some other guys in our team but in my opinion we have a good mix of youth and experience so that the team can always be fresh and competitive, no matter what”.
As for the upcoming opponents, Starović says:
“We were assigned to a very difficult Pool. However, as I said, we also have good players on our roster and we can stand a chance with every opponent. I think we can reach the goals we have set, maybe also with a little bit of luck on our side.”
The home matches of the Serbian national team will take place in Niš, Novi Sad, and Beograd.
“Our fans are always our seventh player,” Starović says.
“They can create a great atmosphere and this way they help us a lot. There are many fans in Nis who always come to cheer on us and the same applies to Novi Sad. The people in Beograd are used to attending some big matches so I am sure that they will fill up the stands as well and gave us wings, supporting us all the way through to the end.”
