Tunisia stun favourites Egypt on opening day of African Olympic Qualification
In the day’s other match, hosts Cameroon impressed the home crowd with a straight sets (25-28, 25-16, 25-12) victory over Ghana to make their ambitions clear.
The competition sees five teams competing for a slot at the London 2012 Olympic Games with the competition running until
January 21.
Tunisia v Egypt 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 29-27, 25-23)
Tunisian outside hitter Marouen Garci led his team in a memorable victory over Egypt and was named best scorer with 18 points, while Saleh Fathy scored 16 for Egypt.
Egyptian big gun Ahmed Salah, best spiker at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup, was held out for much of the match through a stellar blocking effort from their North African rivals.
Cameroon v Ghana 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-12)
Opposite Jean Ndaki used his unstoppable razor sharp hits to clinch a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-12) win over a determined Ghana in 64 minutes. Ndaki scored 12 points to lead the match scorers, while Seido Ajanako led Ghana with eight.
The second day of action will see Cameroon and Algeria face off in a repeat of their semifinal match at the 2011 African Nations Championship in Morocco when Cameroon thrillingly won the encounter 3-2.
