The Pool B hosts Poland won a dramatic battle against the current World Championship runners-up Italy after a tie-break and after being down by a 2-1 in sets: 3-2 (25-14, 19-25, 13-25, 25-21, 15-12).
This victory, that was achieved in front of nearly 9,000 spectators at the Atlas Arena in Łódź, means that Poland claimed the second place in Pool B (4-1; 12 points), squeezing Belgium out to the No.3. Poland avoided Russia in the eighth-finals, while Italy remained at the top of the pool (4-1; 13 points), which was guaranteed to them in case of taking two sets against Poland.
Malwina Smarzek-Godek was Poland’s most prolific player today with 23 points. Paola Egonu scored 25 for Italy, while Miriam Sylla made 70% excellent attack (14/20).
