FOR HONOR AND GLORY: Let the fights at EuroVolley begin!

by WoV

Tomorrow starts the European Championship, the biggest competition for national teams at the “Old Continent”.

Russia

Russia

It will be a fight for medals, honor and glory at the 29th edition of EuroVolley, which will be held in two countries, Italy and Bulgaria.

Russia are the reigning champions. Alekno’s side will try to retain title and they will have a very tough job. Why? Because, World Champions, World League 2015 winner, World League Runner up, World Cup 2015 runner up will be a huge hurdle on their way to gold medal.

Who are those teams?

Poland, France, Serbia, Italy… Do we have to mention Bulgaria and Germany? Yes, we do. These teams will fight for medals along with Russia. Italians want revenge more than anyone. They were defeated by Russians in the final of EuroVolley 2013.

What about other teams?

They are classified as underdogs but we have to say that they should not be underestimated. Especially The Netherlands and Belgium, who have a few world class players in their roster.

Did you know?

The first European championship was held in Italy. Guess who won the gold medal? Czech Republic. The silver went to France, while bronze stayed in Italy. Russia have the most number of medals in their collection – 21 (13 golden medals, 3 silver medals and 5 bronze medals). Italy are in the second place with 12 (6-4-2), while, believe it or not, Czech Republic are behind these two giants with 7 (3-4-0). Serbia have more medals that Czech team but less golden and silver medals – 10 (2-1-7).

The new question is: Will Russia manage to retain the title?
