WoV Player of 2017 (W): 5 candidates – plenty of reasons to vote for each of them

by WoV

This is the time of the year when we launch our traditional Poll for the best Men’s and Women’s volleyball players. These are the reasons why we have chosen these five players in the female competition for the best of the best in 2017.

„De gustibus non disputandum est“ is a famous Latin saying which means „There is no accounting for taste“. We are sure that you have heard of it. These five female players were our choice or, if you like, our taste when it comes to candidates for the 2017 WoV Player of the Year.

Tijana Bošković, the Serbian National Team opposite, has won several individual awards in major tournaments this year, mostly with the national team. Best Opposite award in the 2016/17 Turkish Championship (while playing for Eczacıbaşı VitrA İstanbul), 2017 FIVB Club World Championship and 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix were only a prelude into two enormously valuable recognitions that came afterward. Bošković has crowned winning the gold medal with Serbia in the 2017 CEV European Championship with the MVP award of the tournament. And as a cherry on the top of the cake, she was named Best Player in Europe by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV), a month ago! Bošković achieved all of this at the age of 20!

This year was highly successful for our candidate No.2, Natália Pereira from Brazil. Coming to Europe last summer turned to be a jackpot for an outside hitter as this year brought many memorable moments to her. Natália was named Most Valuable Player of the Turkish Championship after her club Fenerbahçe İstanbul won the title. She snatched the gold medal in the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix with Brazil, being unstoppable for the rivals throughout the tournament and earned MVP award. In addition, she was named Best Outside Spiker.

The Chinese ace Zhu Ting is the queen of the MVP awards in the last two years but we will focus on this year’s recognitions. She has crowned the one-woman show in the 2017 CEV Champions League with the Most Valuable Player award in the tournament while her club VakıfBank İstanbul won the trophy. Zhu was MVP and Best Outside Spiker of the 2017 FIVB Club World Championship as well as Best Outside Spiker of the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix. This was not the end of her recognitions in 2017 as she became MVP and Best Outside Spiker of the 2017 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup. In Turkey, where she plays professionally, Zhu earned Best Scorer and Best Outside Spiker award for 2016/17.

Despite the fact that she did not play a single match in the gold medal campaign of Serbia in the 2017 CEV European Championship due to injury, Milena Rašić established herself as the most dominant middle blocker in the Old Continent and one of the most dominant MBs in the world. Before she sustained an injury that sidelined her from EuroVolley, she was named Best Middle Blocker in the 2016/17 CEV Champions League and 2017 World Grand Prix. With her team VakıfBank İstanbul from Turkey, she grabbed the trophy in the 2016/17 CEV Champions League and 2017 FIVB Club World Championship.

The Bulgarian outside hitter Elitsa Vasileva might be a surprise to many for being in our list for the WoV Player of the Year but she was the best scorer of her team Dinamo Kazan from Russia, in their journey to winning the trophy in the 2017 CEV Cup, the second most prestigious club tournament in Europe. She was also the best scorer of Dinamo in the powerful Russian Championship for the 2016/17. In addition to these successes, she retained the trophy of the Russian national Cup with Dinamo Kazan.

Now, it’s time to visit our Poll Page and VOTE!

These were the criteria for choosing male candidates for the WoV Player of the Year award.
