The sixth seed SESI Vôlei Bauru caused a massive shock to the powerhouse SESC RJ in Game 3 of the Superliga Cimed 2018-2019 playoff quarterfinals by eliminating them from the competition by a 2-1. Sesi recovered from a 0-1 on the road to win the match that was filled with tensions and pressures on referees by a 3-1 (24-26, 27-25, 25-23, 25-19). Thus, the season is over for No.3 SESC, coached by the legendary Bernardo Rezende. And for the first time since they moved to Rio de Janeiro (the 2004/05 season), a record holder with 12 national titles SESC have failed to reach the playoff finals. Furthermore, for the first time since the club was founded (1997, based in Curitiba), SESC did not go through to Superliga semifinals. On the other side, Bauru never passed the quarterfinal obstacle before this season. Obviously, merging with SESI-SP at the beginning of the season has already paid off.
As for Game 3, Tifanny Abreu showed an impeccable display with 28 points, followed by Italian Valentina Diouf who scored 23. Drussyla Costa top-scored for SESC with 15 points.
The fifth seed Osasco Voleibol Clube/Audax took care of other upset in the quarterfinals as they knocked out No.4 Hinode Barueri, also by a 2-1. Osasco prevailed in Game 3 in four sets and qualified for the playoff semifinals for the 18thstraight season, leaving another great coaching name out of the competition – José Guimarães “Zé Roberto”.
American Destinee Hooker poured in 34 points for Osasco, including four aces and three kill blocks Pole Katarzyna Skowrońska scored 22 points for Barueri for which Juliana Amanda Francisco made 80% positive reception.
