Prior to the last round of the preliminary stage, the 3 out of 4 semifinal spots were taken: France and the hosts Bulgaria from Pool 1 and the Czech Republic from Pool 2.

Prior to the last day of the preliminary round, Poland and Italy had a chance of progressing to the semis by booking the last remained ticket and join the Czech Republic from Pool 2. Poland had 9 points, while Italy had 6. It all could have changed in the case of Italy’s straight-set win and Poland’s straight-set loss. By that, these two would be tied at 9 points but Italy would have a better set-ratio. Italy did their share of the work by sweeping Greece 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21). Cosimo Balestra, who is playing Division 4 (Serie C) with Matervolley Castellana, was Italy’s top scorer with 14 points. But, unfortunately for the “Azzurri”, Poland beat the Czech Republic by a 3-0 as well and not only that they moved to the semis, but they did it as the No.1 in the pool. The Czechs have remained at 10 points. Poland captain Jakub Olszewski, who is playing the country’s youth league with SKPS Dunajec Nowy Sącz, top-scored for his team with 17 points.

France and Bulgaria secured their berths in the final four on a penultimate day and had to decide about who will top Pool 1 in the mutual encounter on the last round. The “Les Bleus” prevailed in straight sets, partially 25-18, 25-22, and 25-10, to finish the preliminary stage as the only undefeated side, not losing a single set in their campaign (5-0, 15 points, 15-0 set ratio). Nathan Canovas from France, playing for the youth team of Volley Ball Sennecey Le Grand, scored-game high 14 points but he was outshined by his teammate Anatole Chaboissant. The setter, playing for Division 3 (Nationale 2) side VBP Niort, served as much as 10 aces!
