Serbia National Team is one step closer to defending the throne at the CEV European Women’s Volleyball Championship as it progressed to the quarter-finals over Romania.

Serbia (No.1 in Pool A) wrote down their sixth successive win in the 2019 EuroVolley co-hosted by four nations and kept invincibility in the tournament. The reigning European champions recorded a straight-set victory against Romania (No.4 in Pool C), partially 25-20, 25-17 and 25-23 in the eighth-finals in Ankara (Turkey).

Romania offered stronger resistance than expected which was not a surprise knowing that Serbia played without major star Tijana Bošković today. The head coach Terzić decided to give the rest to an opposite hitter ahead of more difficult battles in the tournament. In the first and third set, Romania were three or four points up until the finish of each of the sets before but their players were not able to resist all the way.

Brankica Mihajlović and Mina Popović led Serbia’s scorers with 11 points apiece. The latter recorded 4 kill blocks. Adelina Budăi-Ungureanu scored 12 points for Romania.

Belgium (No.3 in Pool B) pushed huge favorites Russia (No.2 in Pool D) to the limits in the eighth-final encounter in Bratislava (Slovakia) but ultimately laid their weapons down in four sets. The “Zbornaya“ recovered amazingly in the opening set as they trailed by five (12-7). It took “Yellow Tigers“ a whole set to pull themselves together after losing such a solid advantage.

They reduced the gap in the sets to a 2-1 but had no solution for furious Nataliya Goncharova. Her strength and experience of winning the continental championship two times already, drove her to end the match with 30 points. Irina Koroleva (ex-Zaryazhko) kept the high level in the block (5), while Tatyana Romanova served 4 aces. In Belgium, Celine Van Gestel noted 16 points. Marlies Janssens set up 6 kill blocks.

Netherlands

Netherlands

The unbeaten Netherlands (No.1 in Pool C) became the third national team to advance to the quarterfinals. The Dutch girls surpassed Greece (No.4 in Pool A) in Budapest (Hungary) by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-12).

The nation from the Mediterranean missed their opportunity in the second set when they were four points ahead (11-7). The Netherlands then made a 5-1 run to tie at 12-12 and took the initiative afterward.

Anne Buijs tallied 14 points for “Oranje“, while Yvon Beliën made 70% excellent attack (7/10). Anthi Vasilantonaki top-scored for Greece with 17 points.
