Serbia made quite a stunt by defeating Poland in Pool 12 of the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League.

The current world champions Serbia ended a five-game winning streak of Poland in the 2019 Nations League by defeating them in straight sets (27-25, 25-21, 25-22) on Day 1 of Week 3, in Kortrijk (Belgium). This win can be considered a surprise knowing that Serbia came to play matches in Pool 12 without standouts Bošković, Mihajlović, Ognjenović and many more, as well as without the head coach Zoran Terzić who remained in Belgrade to work with the rest of the group registered for the tournament. He was replaced by his assistant Branko Kovačević. Serbia beat their rivals despite the fact that they had the tournament’s top scorer (172 points prior to this match) Malwina Smarzek and top blocker (24 kill blocks) Agnieszka Kąkolewska playing against them.

A 19-year-old outside hitter Katarina Lazović highlighted for Serbia (4-3 record) with 18 points, Smarzek tallied 19 for Poland (5-2).

Belgium ran over Russia at home in Kortrijk by a 3-0 to conclude Day 1 in Pool 12. Thus, the “Yellow Tigers“ equaled their total wins in the Nations League history which they set in 2018 as they now have a 4-3 record in this year’s tournament. On the other hand, the „Zbornaya“ suffered their fourth straight-set loss in the 2019 Nations League (1-6 record), fifth in a row in total, coming close to the negative record in the tournament which they set last year (6 defeats by 3-0 scoreline).

Belgium’s Britt Herbots scored game-high 20 points. Tatyana Iurinskaia made 11 for Russia.
