Fueled by a passionate home crowd, Japan powered through a tough Polish team to secure a 3-1 win (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22). Captain Mayu Ishikawa delivered a stellar performance with 22 points, supported by Yoshino Sato and Haruyo Shimamura.
Poland showed grit with 16 kill blocks, including seven from Agnieszka Korneluk, and a team-high 19 points from Malwina Smarzek. But Japan’s steady focus and all-around play proved too much.
Korea vs. Bulgaria
Earlier in the day, Korea gave everything they had in a gripping five-set battle against Bulgaria, ultimately falling 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 15-13). Still, the match earned them a crucial point, pulling them just clear of the bottom in the standings.
Sohwi Kang led Korea with 22 points, while Bulgaria’s Milanova and Stanchulova both tallied 20 to clinch the win. With just one game left, Korea’s survival hopes will hinge on Sunday’s showdown.
