Canada overcame a shaky start to beat Libya 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 29-27) in their opening match of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Pasay City, Philippines.
Back with the national team after four years, Sharone Vernon-Evans led all scorers with 22 points, while captain Nicholas Hoag added 20. Middle blockers Fynn McCarthy and Daenan Gyimah chipped in with 12 and 11 points.
Libya, making their first World Championship appearance in 45 years, snatched the opening set but couldn’t hold off Canada’s serving power. Brothers Ahmed and Mohamed Ikhbayri each scored 17 points in the spirited effort.
Canada sealed the win with strong serving, firing 15 aces to Libya’s three.
