MAD W: Madagascar to host Women’s African Club Championship for the first time

Madagascar will host the 2013 Women’s African Club Championship from April 4 to 12 at the Palais de Sport hall. This is the first time ever that the Indian Ocean island will host an international volleyball event. Read more volleyball news on worldofvolley.com.

The sixteen teams participating in this prestigious event are all vying for the lone African ticket to the FIVB Club World Championship next October.

The hall has a capacity of 6,000 spectators and is ready for the opening ceremony of the competition,” said Clarisse Bakoly, president of the Madagascar Volleyball Federation. “We hope to organise a successful tournament and that all teams will show Africa a high level of volleyball,” added Bakoly.

The competition will feature the participation of the major African clubs led by current champion Kenya Prisons who have represented Africa three times in a row in the FIVB Club Championship. Last year’s runner-up, Pipeline Kenya also have their eye on the top prize.

There is an interesting line-up at this year’s Women’s African Club Championship including Egyptian team Al Ahly, who have won the title five times and will return to the competition after their absence last year. Algeria will be represented by MB Bejaia as well as GSP Petroliers who won the local league and cup respectively last season. The FAP team from Cameroon and Kutlwano from Botswana are also strong contenders for the title.

The host country will be represented by the Damant and Stef Auto team who also participated in the last edition of the Club Championship, while Cote d’Ivoire will be represented by AS Tanda and Burundi by Les As
