Brazil remains number one in the men’s and women’s FIVB World Rankings following the latest update on the back of the completion of the Continental Championships.

Brazil on top

Brazil, Russia and Italy have maintained their top three spots on the table in the men’s ranking with USA, led for the first time this year by John Speraw, climbing one spot to number four after winning the NORCECA Championship, pushing 2012 World League winners Poland down one place to fifth position after they finished ninth at the European Championship.

Of the top 10 countries on the men’s World Rankings, Bulgaria – who finished fourth at the European Championship on the back of the same result at this year’s World League and the 2012 Olympic Games – has experienced the greatest jump, going up three places, to now sit at number six.

There has been no movement among the top 11 countries on the women’s FIVB World Rankings, with Brazil, USA and Japan also holding onto the top three spots on the table. Brazil’s success at the FIVB World Grand Prix pushed Jose Roberto Guimaraes’ team to the top of the FIVB World Rankings earlier this year.

The Olympic champions took over the top spot from USA, the team that they beat in the London 2012 Olympic Games gold medal match. USA had been top since November 2011 when they had knocked Brazil off first place following the second of their three successive World Grand Prix titles.

World Grand Prix and World Grand Champions Cup hosts, Japan remain in third place, followed by Italy and World Grand Prix silver medallists China in fifth.
