The nominees for this award were announced last Monday by the Luxembourg Association of Sports Writers and Journalists. Braas – who last year played in Germany before returning home for the 2013/2014 season – is one of 16 sportsmen who are in the race for the award that last year went to swimmer Laurent Carnol.
Volleyball has already won one of the awards that will be presented on December 5th for another member of the men’s national team, Kamil Rychlicki, has been voted “Young Sportsman of the Year” after the excellent performance he delivered at the Games of the Small States of Europe held last May in the Grand Duchy.
At the end of a single round-robin tournament the home heroes around head coach Burkhard Disch claimed silver with Cyprus topping the final charts with 12 points and four wins in as many matches.
As for the “Sportsman of the Year” award, besides Gilles Braas the 15 nominees shortlisted by the Grand Duchy’s sports media are: Stefano Bensi (soccer), Dirk Bockel (triathlon), Laurent Carnol (swimming), Jempy Drucker (cycling), Charel Grethen (athletics), Tom Habscheid (Paralympic/discus throw), David Hauser (car racing), Jeff Henckels (archery), Aurélien Joachim (soccer), Bob Jungels (cycling), Martin Muller (handball), Mario Mutsch (soccer), Jean-François Schneiders (swimming), Lyndon Sosa (shooting), and Raphaël Stacchiotti (swimming).
