After winning the first-round tournament played last May in Latvia, Estonia advanced directly to the third step of the qualification process scheduled for January 3-5 to play Serbia, Azerbaijan and Israel in Baku.
The home heroines of Estonia could even upset Belarus in their first clash with a sterling straight victory (27-25, 25-20, and 25-22) over the side that finished this year’s European Championship in twelfth place.
Belarus then bounced back to claim the second match in straight sets (25-16, 25-18, and 25-23) and also the final fixture, this time with the score of 3:1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-15, and 25-23).
Estonia head coach Peeter Vahtra has got many positives to take from these matches:
“We realized that we can compete and even beat teams that are much stronger than us. In Baku we are going to fight with glowing hearts with each of our opponents and try to cause a sensation. Our game was based on good serving and we definitely performed our best in the first match we played with Belarus.”
