Juantorena, Leal, León… the list of Cuban male Volleyball players who recently debuted in the jersey of the national team of a country other than their own might enlarge by a new name in the not so far future. A 33-year-old Camejo started the procedure for getting the right to compete for “Zbornaya” a year ago. And if everything goes according to the plan, a 2-year waiting period that is imposed by the regulations of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) for changing a sports nationality will expire just in time for Camejo to play the Tokyo Olympics.
“The process is still underway. But I, unfortunately, can’t say for sure when will I be able to play for Russia. It’s simply because I don’t know, it doesn’t depend on me,“ the Cuban outside hitter stated in an interview for Sport-Express.
Camejo does not think that his age will be the factor that might prevent him to earn a spot in Russia’s roster when the time comes.
“Yes, I’m 33, but I’m in very good physical shape. The competition in the Russian national team is really very difficult, but I’ll train. (laughs) And I’ll do my best to be selected for the 2020 Olympic Games.“
Zenit Saint-Petersburg member added that he has chosen to play for Russia because he lived and played the longest in this country to which he has adapted very well and was always treated with great attention and care.
