In the final of the 33rd edition of the South American Women’s Championship held in Cajamarca, Peru, Brazil defeated Colombia in straight sets, partially 25-22, 25-23 and 25-20, to win the tournament for the 13th successive time, the 21st time overall. Interestingly, Brazil managed to reach the final in all 11 editions of the tournament that included eliminations after the round-robin stage. The team coached by Zé Roberto crowned the campaign in which they were undefeated with five wins (lost only one set), while Colombia repeated the silver medal which they collected in the previous two editions. Two years ago, on home soil in Cali, they played the final for the first time ever.
The hosts Peru claimed bronze (the ninth in total) after defeating Argentina by a 3-2 (25-19, 26-24, 17-25, 19-25, 16-14).
Since the top four countries from the 33rd edition of the continental championship secured a spot in the South American Olympic Qualifier, and Brazil arrived in Cajamarca already with the guaranteed Olympic quota by winning one of the FIVB International Qualifiers, Venezuela assured their participation in the continental qualifications for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics despite finishing as the fifth-placed side. They beat Bolivia in straight sets in the face-off for the No.5 in Cajamarca.
