The team coached by Renan Dal Zotto defeated Argentina by a 3-1, partially 25-23, 25-21, 18-25 and 25-21, in the last round of Pool A at the 2019 South American Championship in Temuco and Santiago (Chile) and advanced to the semifinals.
Brazil, who went to the tournament with the roster that contains the mix of experienced and young players, had to work hard to prevail the fiercest continental rivals (deprived of the help from three important players due to FIVB’s suspension). Brazil’s star of Cuban origin, Yoandy Leal, was the top scorer on the winning side with 17 points. Jan Martínez was the most prominent player of Argentina today with 18 points.
Both Brazil and Argentina have qualified to the semifinals – the „Seleção“ as the No.1 (3-0; 9 points), while Argentina claimed the No.2 (2-1; 6 points). Two other teams from this pool, Colombia and Ecuador, will fight for the placement between the fifth and eighth place.
Venezuela inflicted a first defeat to the hosts Chile in a direct duel for the top spot in Pool B: 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24). Peru and Bolivia will play for the places from the fifth to the eighth.
