VakifBank has swept away Dinamo Kazan in the rematch of the Champions League Playoffs 12 and qualified for the next stage! Europe will have a new champion.

VakifBank

VakifBank

If we recall Giovanni Guidetti’s words that last season Dinamo Kazan did not play against the best VakifBank in the big final of the Champions League, than we can say that this time Russians ran into almost perfect Vakif. No, we will not say almost. VakifBank was just perfect in Istanbul! Because it is not happening everyday that someone eliminates the reigning champion of Europe with such a powerful performance.

Turkish giant continued where it left off in Kazan. Squad of Giovanni Guidetti made a great opening of the rematch and had +6 at one point of the first set (17:11), but Dinamo managed to reduce the margin to only 18:16! Couple of moments later it was 20:17, and then home side made the crucial run thanks to fantastic serves of Onal Guldeniz! She made two aces, while Robin de Kruijf scored once from a counter and Vakif was up ahead at 23:17! Kazan saved four set balls afterward (24:18 – 24:22), but Carolina Costagrande ended the first set with a powerful spike – 25:22 for Vakif.

The second set decided many things. There was a close battle until the second TTO, but then home team escaped to 18:14. Then we saw “two by two battle”. Kazan approached to 18:16, Vakif went on 20:16, Kazan again split the margin to 20:18, but Vakif increased it to 22:18. At 23:20, Milena Rašić blocked Olesya Nikolaeva for 24:20… Robin de Kruijf ended this set with a great spike – 25:21.

Why we have written that the second set decided many things? Because it has given an anormous boost to the Turkish side, while it had totally opposite impact on the visitors. VakifBank used that big advantage to literally dominate the third set. You can see the outcome.

Now, we are leading 2-0 for Turkish-Russian volleyball war. Probably Dinamo Moscow will eliminate Fenerbahce. Halkbank-Zenit and Omichka-Galatasaray will be interesting. By the way, Vakifbank will win champions league, that is almost for sure.
