While the 2019 CEV European Women’s Volleyball Championship enters the stage of battling for medals, the start of the Men’s tournament is coming close. Vital Heynen, the head coach of major favorites Poland, had a clear message to the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) officials before the tournament.

Poland are currently preparing for the 2019 EuroVolley, which will start on September 12 in four countries: Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Slovenia. The team coached by Vital Heynen will play Pool D in Amsterdam and Rotterdam and will face the Netherlands, Estonia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Montenegro. The Belgian expert criticized the format of the tournament that consists of 24 participants which are the largest-ever number of teams playing the continental championship and it coincides with the female competition.

“The 24 teams are too much. It can be seen now in the Women’s championship. You can count the number of matches that ended with the result of a 3-0, which is a large percentage, and compare to how it was before. It is not good for Volleyball. One-way matches harm any sport. Tight matches are needed. There are no 24 teams in Europe which are on the same level. I am afraid that it will be the same in the Men’s EuroVolley. I would prefer a tournament with 16 participants,” the head coach of the reigning world champions stated for Polsat Sport.

He is correct provided, the biggest countries will stop to use the best foreign players in their NTs. Moreover that the organiserś money, and corruption will not manipulate international tournaments as we have witnessed in some volleyball strongest countries several times lately.... See WCh, OG, QOG, etc...

If I am not mistaken, during the VNL 2019 preliminary round , 120 matches were played... 45 of them had ended by a result 3:0... Do try to check me... What was the % of these matches? Interesting, the Mr. Heynen has not critised this competition , but only ECh.. Why? It was said that in VNL will contest only the best NTs from all over the world.. We can continue with other international competitions..

2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship. Data are from wikipedia - There were 94 matches. But 43 of them ended 3:0. However what is very interesting is a fact that in 3. round, where should have been the better NTs was rate 6 matches and 4 of them ended 3:0. In final round , where played the best NTs, there were 4 matches and 2 of them ended 3:0.. You can check me, I can be mistaken....

[@John Doek] Everyone criticised VNL, Heynen being one of them, when its formula was introduced. It is mainly the fault of VNL that there is so little time to rest and prepare for bigger tournaments in the second part of national season, there is too much matches to play.

Re: @~sadaf
Issue of his statement was that he asks for restricted, limited participation of NTs, due to of absence of tight matches...Moreover he had used the argument - results 3:0. So that I have used the statistics from other competitions, where should have been much more tight matches - like VNL, World Championship, due to of selection criteria . ( I did not treat the formula of VNL at all... )
The results of this small analysis are interesting, which I did not expected - see my previous comments. Remarkable indication is that the in final phases of these tournaments where had competed the strongest NTs, which should have been on the similar/same level, the percentage of matches which had ended 3:0 is higher as in a prelimenary phase, which is also pretty high. Especially when these NTs should have been the best in the world...

However a different question is - why was increased the numbers of NTs at European Championship?
Perhaps I will try to make some remarks on one aspect of that later on, from a volleyball fan point of view..

POL M: Young Australian coach Reynolds will command Jastrzębski next season

Many Strength and Conditioning Coaches/Scoutman are trying to get into coaching. Due to their lack of experience and knowledge, at first, they take a major pay cut in comparison to actual volleyball coaches. Currently, coaching jobs are paying very little, even in the top leagues, and some of the experienced coaches are not taking jobs for 25.000-40.000 EUR, knowing that demands are just as high as before when they were making double of this salary. Unfortunately, club leaderships see coaches as a disposable matter and therefore keep dropping salaries because there are candidates that will take these jobs. I am not here to judge, just to describe some of the dynamics around this profession. Reply

Interesting trend, that some coaches who specialised on physical training, some who never played volleyball on top level, became pretty successful volleyball coaches. It can be observed in some menś and women teams. It reflects a situation that volleyball has become a very physical sport. Even the world champion country, which in past had taught others, needs coaches from abroad who come into this category. Reply
