Transgaz Stavropol were close to achieving a long-lasting dream – the participation in the Russian men’s volleyball Championship but instead, they are at risk of disappearing.

Transgaz sensationally won the 2019/20 Russian Division 2 (Visshaya liga “A“). They were at the top of standings at the moment of the season cancelation due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was the best result in the history of the Kislovodsk team but as it seems it won’t be crowned with the participation in the Superliga.

The Russian giant among natural gas suppliers, Gazprom, suspended its sponsorship of Transgaz, which might even lead to the disappearance of the club. There’s the option that Transgaz move to the city of Nevinnomyssk in which case it will keep their spot in Division 2 for the next season given they would be sponsored by the largest chemical industry enterprise in southern Russia - Nevinnomysskiy Azot.

In the meantime, many key players already left the club: middle blockers Dmitriy Kravchenko (Enisey), Ivan Polyanskiy (both in Enisey), and Yaroslav Vernyy (Yugra-Samotlor), libero Vladislav Dyakov, and setter Marat Gafarov (Dinamo-LO). Also, the head coach Yuriy Lisitskiy departed, he’ll assist Igor Shulepov in Ural.

Transgaz is known as the club in which two London Olympics winners started their careers - Sergey Grankin and Aleksey Obmochaev, while a two-time CEV EuroVolley winner Andrey Ashchev spent one part of his career there.

FIVB releases COVID-19 guidelines for restart of volleyball activities

At last the guidelines on Covid-19, from a top governing volleyball body.... I appreciate them. It is a progress. Some of recommendations are general, some specific for volleybal. It seems to be the soft legal instrument. Nevertheless they could assist to national VFs… Majority of recommendations are reasonable, some of them should not be a problem to kept, some will need a much bigger effort to be kept, some should be included yet. For this goal, there should be obtained a support (best voluntary) and discipline from athletes, coaches, officials, referees , medical staff, club owners, fans etc - realised what is in a stake… Media will have an important role in that..
For implementing of these measures there should be probably prepared also some Roadmap.. Perhaps it would be a suitable to consider the responsibility for pertinent officials, positions, and how to enforce crucial measures, recommendations, specified for this sport - if the situation would be worsen ....
We can hope , that these epidemiological preventive measures will be only temporary and volleyball will return soon to halls, and fans could see their teams personally.
