Russia and Italy top latest European Ranking List for national teams

The latest European Ranking List says following - Russia is the best volleyball nation at the moment, in both men and women category. This list will be used to seed teams in the first and second round of the 2014 and 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championships. The Drawing of Lots is scheduled for October 26 in Luxembourg City.

The men’s ranking list confirms the supremacy of 2012 Olympic champions and 2013 European champions Russia who this year also won gold at the FIVB World League Finals in Argentina. Italy nevertheless sky-rocketed to the top of the list after winning four consecutive medals in major competitions, following up on their silver medal from 2011 with another second place at the 2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship and adding to their resume Olympic bronze and another third place also at the World League Finals. The other major change in the ranking was contributed by Belgium whose national team moved up by seven places – from 17 to 10 – after winning the 2013 CEV Volleyball European League and making the 1/4 finals at the 2013 CEV VELUX EuroVolley. The top five is nevertheless completed by another three Volleyball heavyweights, with Serbia ranked third, while Bulgaria and Poland follow in fourth and fifth place respectively. With their silver medal from the 2013 European League, Croatia also significantly improved their ranking, moving up from 25th to 18th place.   

After winning European gold in Berlin, Russia moved up by five places to top also the women’s Ranking List with 328 points. Though they did not make the semis of the 2013 EuroVolley, Italy is still ranked second (322) followed by 2011 European champions and 2013 fourth-placed Serbia. The top five is completed by Turkey and Germany; with their historic bronze medal from the 2013 EuroVolley and silver from the European League Finals in Varna Belgium made the top 10 improving their previous ranking by five places.
