By beating strong sides like Serbia, the USA, and Italy in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League, the Belgian Men’s National Team showed that it will be a hard nut to crack this season. The claim was proven last night in Katowice, in Pool D opening of the 2017 EuroVolley in Poland when the „Red Dragons“ downed title holders France.

“I’m really happy not only with the win but also with our performance today. Our win is more than a surprise. I think nobody, even we, expected that we can defeat the French team – the big favorites to regain the title. We won the first set and we felt that we can achieve a good result today, that everything is possible. Today, we played well in the block and defense. It was a hard and long match so I’m happy that now we have a day off and we can prepare well for the next game against Turkey,” Vital Heynen, the head coach of the Belgian NT, stated.

The absence of Earvin Ngapeth from the lineup due to a back injury was not a mitigating factor for France for suffering a defeat to Belgium, and the „Team Yavbou“ head coach Laurent Tillie is certainly aware of that.

“Right now, a medal is very far ahead of us, but it was just the first match. We played with a very good team, who caused us a lot of problems. We lost our rhythm throughout the match and they played with enthusiasm and much more consistency in the block. We have to find back our pace. Our situation in Pool D is now much more complicated and we have to win on Sunday if we want to think about a medal,” Tillie said after the match.
