China scored the seventh straight win in the 2019 Nations League despite being two sets down against Italy at home in Hong Kong: 3-2 (18-25, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-13). Thus, China broke the five-game losing streak against today’s rivals at world major tournaments.
The “Azzurri” could not preserve, not only a two-set lead but also a 12-7 lead in the fourth set, even though their opposite Paola Egonu poured in 39 points, of which 7 in the first set only! She included 4 kill blocks and 6 aces in her total scoring performance. On the other side, Zhu Ting made 26, while Yuan Xinyue set up 6 kill blocks. Both China and Italy are at 7-2 in the tournament.
By succumbing to Japan (5-4 record) in straight sets in Pool 9, the Netherlands (2-7) lost their fourth successive match in the 2019 Nations League, equaling their longest losing streak in the competition but also in a single world-level tournament.
Yuki Ishii continued to top Japan’s scorers in the tournament by notching 15 points today. Annick Meijers scored 11 for the Dutch team.
