AVC: Long and hard journey for Asian teams to qualify for 2014 FIVB World Championships

It’ will be a long, exciting and hard journey for the Asian teams to go before they manage to clinch the tickets to the 2014 FIVB Men’s and Women’s World Volleyball Championship. The ten winners from Zonal tournament will join teams from Iran, Japan, China, Korea, Australia and New Zealand in four pools with the first finisher of each pool will qualify for the World Championship to be held in Poland.

30 AVC National Federations (28 men’s and 16 women’s teams) are to take part in the qualification process for the 2014 World Championships, a record number for the continent. This is a significant increase in the level of participation from the 2010 edition when only 20 men’s and 11 women’s teams took part in the qualifications.

According to the process endorsed by the Board, the men’s qualifying tournament will be held in three stages:

(1) Sub-Zonal Q/T will be held only in the AVC Western Zone, with the 10 teams being divided into three pools. Top two teams of each pool will qualify for the Zonal Q/T.

(2) Zonal Q/T will be played in six pools . Central Zone and Western Zone each has two pools while Eastern and Southeastern Zone each has one pool. Ten teams will qualify for the final qualification tournament.

(3) The ten winners from Zonal tournament will join teams from Iran, Japan, China, Korea, Australia and New Zealand in four pools with the first finisher of each pool will qualify for the World Championship to be held in Poland.

A total of 16 teams will participate in the Women’s Qualification Tournament. India and Uzbekistan in the pool of Central Zone, Hong Kong, PR Korea and Chinese Taipei are in the Eastern Zone Pool and Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam in Southeastern Zone Pool, with top squad of each pool qualifying for the final tournament where they will join Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Australia, and New Zealand in two pools. The top two of each pool will clinch the tickets to the Women’s World Championship in Italy.

The Qualification Tournament will start from June and finish in September of 2013.
