Volero Zürich celebrated an emotional triumph – the 2022 Swiss Women’s Volleyball Cup.
Volero Zürich are back onto the Swiss volleyball’s major scene. Four years after outsourcing the professional team to France (where it plays under the name Volero Le Cannet and has just won the regular season in the Ligue A Féminine) and withdrawing to the Swiss 2nd division (NLB), they claimed the 2022 national cup (Mobiliar Volley Cup). Thanks to the 3-2 (25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 20-18) win over Volley Düdingen in Winterthur, Volero returned to the European Cups. The team commanded by an experienced head coach from Serbia, Svetlana Ilić, beat the top division (NLA) playoff semi-finalists in 2 hours and by converting the 8th match point in the tie-break. According to Swiss media, it may have happened before that a 2nd division team wins the women’s national cup but nobody at the volleyball association remembers that.
This was Volero’s 14th cup triumph, the first since 2018. They beat four NLA teams in the campaign. This success followed the promotion of the Zürich side to NLA as they dominated the NLB, giving up only 2 sets on that path. In the last 4 years since their pro squad moved to France, Volero, still presided by Stav Jacobi, have been relying only on young and non-established players, no longer using players with world-class levels as in the old days.
On the same day when the women’s final was held, the men also had their Swiss Cup final. The game was played in the same venue, the sold-out Win4 AXA Arena in Winthertur (it was also sold out for the women’s decider). Lindaren Volley Amriswil became the holders for the 7th time, beating Volley Schönenwerd in 5 sets, partially 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, and 15-6.
