Players of China’s Bohai Bank
The veteran Wang, whose past experience includes coaching the China women’s national team, first praised the high level of the overall competition and then spoke about how strong a challenge they will be facing within their own group.
“I hope we can perform up to our level as we are going to play against very big teams in our pool,” Wang said through an interpreter. “We hope to learn from them and that will make our team better and better.”
Defending champions Rabita Baku of Azerbaijan and Sollys/Nestle of Brazil are the two other teams grouped in the tough Pool A for the six-team event. Pool B consists of Fenerbahce of Turkey, Africa’s Kenya Prisons and NORCECA’s representative Lancheras de Cataño of Puerto Rico.
“We know how strong those two teams are and it won’t be easy for us within our pool,” Wang added. “But we will do our best against them.”
The Bohai Bank team has been training for about one month now and they are also taking the FIVB Club World Championship as part of its preparation for the local championship in China.
“Our season starts in one month so we have been training together for a few weeks, about a month,” he said. “We have not reached our peak yet but playing here will be very helpful.”
As the first team to arrive here for the competition, Wang also took time to praise the hospitality of the people in Qatar.
“We have a very good impression about Doha and also from its people who have treated us very nice,” he said.
Bohai Bank team was founded in 1998 and it has a rich volleyball tradition, having won eight titles in the China Volleyball League, five national championships and four gold medals in the Asian Women’s Club championships.
