In an interview for the Polish Volleyball Federation website, he has spoken about his desire to play for Poland.

There has never been a word of regret because I didn’t choose another country to represent. My desire has always been Poland. My wife is Polish and my daughter was born in Poland and I live there when I am not in Russia. Poland is my home now. I didn’t think of representing another country, so I would not even say that I made the choice. I chose the country where I wanted to live and desire to play in this national team was a natural thing after receiving the Polish citizenship,” says Leon.

Wilfredo Leon represented the colors of his homeland in the past (2007-2012). He won a silver medal at the World Championship and bronze at the World League 2012. After failing to qualify for the London Olympics, he decided to leave Cuba.

The resignation from Cuba was due to many different factors which I would not like to speak publicly, but of course one of them was the desire to be a better athlete. I was a difficult decision. Now, I am nor regretting of leaving Cuba even after seeing all my teammates playing at the Olympic Games in Rio. Of course, every athlete dream is to play at the Olympic Games but I am not frustrated because of not having Olympic Games experience. Now, after receiving the FIVB permission to play for Poland, I have a real chance to play in Tokyo 2020,” says Leon for pzps.pl.
