The first set opened with a very good block and attack from the Russians, making Cuba take a first timeout at 4-1. The team of Orlando Samuels responded and stormed ahead to a one-point lead by the first TTO. In spite of the good game at the net, the gap increased and it was Russia who then had to take a timeout at 13-16. Powerful attacks from Maxim Mikhailov helped the hosts to draw level twice at 18-18 and 20-20, but Cuba sealed the set at 23-25.
The second set was an equal affair as both teams looked to gain a footing in the match, but Russia was two points behind the visitors at the first TTO (6-8). Dmitry Muserskiy served well to make things even 9-9. Maxim Mikhaylov served brilliantly to achieve a one point advantage 11-10 and they held onto this until the second TTO. Nevertheless Cuba was perfect, spiking against the hosts and finishing the set 22-25.
Russia seemed to find their rhythm in the third and thanks to some great plays from Dmitry Ilinykh in attack they took an 8-4 lead. The hosts kept their momentum and led convincingly 16-11 by the second TTO. Cuba called for a second timeout at 23-19, before reducing the score to 24-24, but the Russian defending was outstanding to close the third set 26-24.
Cuba used their effective spikes to move ahead in the fourth, prevailing 8-6 by the first TTO. Russia never gave up, but they couldn’t stop Leon, who kept his team five points ahead 14-9. Vladimir Alekno called for his team at 17-14 before Cuba managed to increase the gap and end the match 20-25.
