The players coached by Julio Velasco won the South American Qualification Tournament which they hosted and which consisted of the best three national teams from the 2017 South American Championship, with the exception of the winners Brazil who secured their berth in the World Champs by grabbing a gold medal.
In a packed gymnasium in the city of Salta, Argentina beat Venezuela by a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-12) to make their second win in the Qualifiers and place themselves in the World Championship for the 12th time, 11th in a row.
Santiago Darraidou and Cristian Poglajen topped the “Albiceleste” with 13 points each, while Jhonlenn Barreto made 9 for Venezuela.
These are the 16 national teams that earned their spot in the 2018 World Champs, so far:
Europe (CEV) – Italy and Bulgaria (the hosts), Poland, France, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Russia, Serbia, Finland, and Belgium;
South America (CSV) – Brazil and Argentina;
Asia & Oceania (AVC) – Iran, China, Japan, and Australia;
North America (NORCECA) will have 5 representatives, while Africa (CAVB) will have three representatives and all will be known by the ranking at both continental tournaments – NORCECA on September 26 – October 1 and CAVB on October 20 – October 30.
