The case of the Bosnian-born Meliha İsmailoğlu has been resolved by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and she was allowed to compete for Turkey National Team in the 2019 EuroVolley. But, less than a month ago, she was banned by the same institution to play for Turkey in the International Qualifier for the Olympics in Tokyo due to the fact that she did not complete a two-year waiting period that comes from changing the sports nationality (from Bosnian to Turkish).
Without getting into specifics, the FIVB has approved Meliha to return to the National Team of Turkey, for which she regularly competed in the last six years. The FIVB did not give any explanation on which grounds was Meliha allowed to wear Turkey National Team jersey in the first place but, as several Italian media reported, its Board of Directors approved an amnesty for all players who changed their national team without having completed the registration procedures correctly. This is the very situation in which Meliha found herself, knowing that she has already defended the colors of Bosnia and Herzegovina before playing for Turkey.
The FIVB found that there are several cases similar to that of Turkey opposite hitter. For this reason, it has decided to open a “window” until December 2019, allowing these players to avoid the two-year waiting period by making the change of their sports nationality regular.
