The libero of the U.S. Men’s Volleyball national team Dustin Watten tied himself to the Polish top division side GKS Katowice with a two-year contract.

A 32-year-old American libero Watten returned to playing in the Plus Liga after a year. Between 2016 and 2018, the U.S. national team member competed for Cerrad Czarni Radom. Last season, he defended the colors of Berlin Recycling Volleys with whom he became the German champion.

Watten has been a member of the national team of the United States since 2014, winning the 2015 FIVB World Cup and 2017 NORCECA Championship.

Prior to Watten, Katowice engaged outside hitters Jakub Szymański (Buskowianka Kielce, Division 2), Rafał Szymura (ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle) and Adrian Buchowski (MKS Będzin), teenage middle blocker Kamil Drzazga with the 2.12m of height (AKS V LO Rzeszów, Division 3), setter Jan Firlej (Lindemans Aalst, Belgium), middle blockers Jan Nowakowski (ONICO Warszawa) and Miłosz Zniszczoł (Indykpol AZS Olsztyn), libero Szymon Gregorowicz (MKS Będzin), and opposite hitters Jakub Jarosz (Asseco Resovia Rzeszów) and Wiktor Musiał (KS Lechia Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Division 2).

Katowice will also have a new head coach in the 2019/20 season as Dariusz Daszkiewicz (Poland U23 Men’s national team) replaced Piotr Gruszka who took over the bench in Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, a month and a half ago.

POL M: Young Australian coach Reynolds will command Jastrzębski next season

Many Strength and Conditioning Coaches/Scoutman are trying to get into coaching. Due to their lack of experience and knowledge, at first, they take a major pay cut in comparison to actual volleyball coaches. Currently, coaching jobs are paying very little, even in the top leagues, and some of the experienced coaches are not taking jobs for 25.000-40.000 EUR, knowing that demands are just as high as before when they were making double of this salary. Unfortunately, club leaderships see coaches as a disposable matter and therefore keep dropping salaries because there are candidates that will take these jobs. I am not here to judge, just to describe some of the dynamics around this profession. Reply

POL M: Young Australian coach Reynolds will command Jastrzębski next season

Interesting trend, that some coaches who specialised on physical training, some who never played volleyball on top level, became pretty successful volleyball coaches. It can be observed in some menś and women teams. It reflects a situation that volleyball has become a very physical sport. Even the world champion country, which in past had taught others, needs coaches from abroad who come into this category. Reply
