After winning silver last year, Azerbaijan’s champions Rabita BAKU have set the highest goal for their participation in the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League with the intention to seize the trophy. Rabita head coach, Italian-born Angiolino Frigoni, is returning back to women’s Volleyball after spending a few years in Russia where he mentored the men’s team of Ural UFA. Frigoni also worked with Italy men’s and women’s national team and won Olympic silver in 1996 as assistant coach of Julio Velasco. Some years later, in 2005, he was at the helm of Sant’Orsola Asystel NOVARA that made the final match of the CEV Volleyball Champions League losing there to another Volleyball heavyweight from his native country, Volley BERGAMO.

“I am very excited to be here and look forward to the start of the season” he said while addressing the media in Baku. “My team started their preparations for the coming season already in August and day by day we are trying to improve on the quality of our game. This is just the beginning and I hope that the best is still to come”.

As she is spending her sixth season in Baku with Rabita, Serbia Sanja Starović will be the team captain. Together with Rabita she has already won the national league of Azerbaijan five times, two silver medals (2011 and 2013) in the CEV Volleyball Champions League, one gold and one silver medal at the FIVB Club World Championships as well as a bronze medal in the CEV Volleyball Cup back in 2010.

“I am very happy with being the captain especially as Rabita is my team and Baku has become my second home. I wish we can have a good season and we get the results we have been longing for already since a long time”.
