Without having sponsors to finance the season, Maringá made official that they won’t compete in the Superliga.
The club from the Paraná state has been present in the national championship for the past seven years. After achieving a good performance in the first two seasons, qualifying for the playoffs of the competition, the others were more or less marked by the financial problems and the battle to avoid relegation.
At the same time, it means that the 2004 Athens Olympic Games gold medalist Ricardo Garcia “Ricardinho” has retired once again. The ex-setter of the Brazil National Team took over the presidency of Maringá two years ago, after playing for this club since 2013 (with the exception of the half of the 2014/15 season when he went to Italy’s Cucine Lube Civitanova), but briefly ended his retirement at the beginning of the last season.
The end of the Maringá project was practically announced when the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) released the list of the 2020/21 Superliga participants without the name of the Paraná team on it.
