Along with the tendency of repurposing the big Ibirapuera hall in São Paulo, which will be transformed into a shopping center, another indoor arena in Brazil, the biggest one, will also be remodeled.
The government of the Minas Gerais state is moving ahead with the privatization project for a 25,000-seat arena Mineirinho. Unlike Ibirapuera, from which the sports will be removed completely, the idea of reconstructing the hall in Belo Horizonte won’t exclude the sporting part as it will be multifunctional.
At the moment, Mineirinho rarely hosts major sporting events. It has been the home for Brazil Volleyball National Team, both men’s and women’s, for decades but, in recent years, the ‘Seleção’ is playing more and more matches in other halls across the country. Minas Tênis Clube (volleyball and basketball) have their own hall, while men’s club volleyball multi-champions Sada Cruzeiro Vôlei usually host their matches in the city of Contagem and only go to Mineirinho for finals.
However, the legendary arena poses as headquarter to 13 sports federations from Minas Gerias, and they will all have to be relocated when the future concessionaire starts the new project.
