In a hard-fought contest that surpassed expectations, Türkiye’s national women’s volleyball team, ranked No.1 in the world, clinched their quarter-finals spot at the 2023 CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship. They defeated Belgium in four sets with a score of 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-15, 32-30).
The competition is being held across four European countries—Italy, Germany, Belgium, and Estonia—and Turkey remains undefeated in the tournament thus far. Contrary to pre-match forecasts that predicted a more straightforward victory for Türkiye based on their previous performances, the Round of 16 match was a nail-biter.
Melissa Vargas was the star of the match for Türkiye, contributing a staggering 27 points. Ebrar Karakurt wasn’t far behind, adding another 20 points to Türkiye’s tally. On the Belgian side, Pauline Martin led the charge with 18 points, but it wasn’t enough to overpower the top-ranked Turkish team.
