IN MEMORIAM: The best Men’s player in history of the Czech volleyball dies after stroke

The best-ever Czech Men’s Volleyball player Josef Musil passed away at the age of 84 in Prague.

A two-time Olympic Games medal winner (silver in the 1964 Tokyo and bronze in the 1969 Mexico City) Josef Musil ‘Bulda’, died in the “Thomayer Hospital” in the Czech capital of Prague, less than two months before his 85th birthday, where he was taken after collapsing with a stroke. Musil was struggling with the Alzheimer’s Disease for several years.

During his professional career, Musil led Czechoslovakia to the gold medals in the FIVB World Championship and CEV European Championship twice each as a setter and was the first foreign player to wear the jersey of Azimut Modena, in Italy. He was involved in winning the first-ever national title for the club in 1969/70.

In 2001, Musil was named the best Men’s player in the history of the Czech volleyball in the 20th century, as well as one of the eight best players of the century by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), being awarded along with the names like: Karch Kiraly (USA), Lorenzo Bernardi (ITA), Hugo Conte (ARG), Renan Dal Zotto (BRA), Katsutoshi Nekoda (JPN), Konstantin Reva (USSR and RUS) and Tomasz Wójtowicz (POL).
