The Japanese National Team took advantage of the absence of the main Korean star Kim Yeon-Koung, who decided to skip this tournament, to beat the Asian rivals in straight sets, partially 25-21, 25-21, 26-24, in Tokyo. Thus, Japan joined Brazil and China among the teams who finished Day 1 with a win.

Rika Nomoto scored 18 points for Japan. Ha Hye-Jin notched 20 points for Korea.
