Valentina Diouf was the best scorer of the match with 14 points. The young Germans, after their defeat on Wednesday against the Dominican Republic (1-3), could however not avoid losing a second match.
Germany head coach Giovanni Guidetti came to Montreux with a young team in order to test new players and to give some rest to the more experienced players, many of them who had just finished their club season. For example, the mercenaries Maggi Kozuch and Maren Brinker who played in the Italian League or Christiane Fürst and Angelina Hübner (Green) in Turkey.
Today evening the Germans had to pay the price for this decision. Although their opponents from Italy were also young, they were from the beginning wiser and more mature on the court. In addition, their technical level seemed much higher, especially in the initial phase of the game. While Germany received a tough correction in the first set (11-25) and were down 10-16-in the second one, they managed to heroically fight back in the game. It is finally a block error which handed down the verdict of the second set, in favor of Italy (27-25). The third set remained balanced for the first half, but then Italy scored a couple of points and took the lead without letting Germany ever come back to the score (25-20).
