CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA, USA — Volleyball powerhouses from across North and Central America and the Caribbean are competing at the 2023 NORCECA Senior Men’s Continental Championship, from Sept. 5-10. Seven teams have descended on the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center with hopes of clinching the championship title. The line-up includes the USA, Canada, Suriname, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Mexico.
The teams are split into two pools for the first round of the competition. Pool A includes Canada, Dominican Republic, and Mexico, while Pool B consists of USA, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Suriname.
Day 1 Recap:
USA dominates Suriname
USA kicked off the championship with a dominating performance, breezing past Suriname in straight sets (25-14, 25-9, 25-10). Jake Hanes of the U.S. was the standout player, contributing 14 points to the match. Suriname’s Keven Sporkslede put up a notable effort, leading his team with seven points.
Cuba overcomes Puerto Rico
In another 3-0 victory, Cuba overcame Puerto Rico with set scores of (25-21, 25-19, 25-15). Although the match began closely contested, Cuba quickly found their rhythm. Cuban player Miguel Ángel López impressed with a total of 13 points, while Puerto Rico’s Jamal Ellis managed 11 points.
Canada outplays Dominican Republic
Canada made a statement with their opening match, defeating the Dominican Republic in straight sets (25-11, 25-8, 25-12). Canadian player Stephen Marr was the star, securing 14 points for his team. On the Dominican side, Adrian Figueroa was the leading scorer with seven points.
