Gergana Dimitrova topped the scorers with 17 points for Bulgaria while Merete Lutz was the best scorer for the USA with 11 kills. USA committed 17 unforced errors, Bulgaria only 10.
Even though USA recovered well after their cold shower in the first set (12-25), Bulgaria controlled the game at the end of the second period and kept momentum in the third and last set. The US passers experienced a hard time with ten Bulgarian service winners.
Bulgaria continue their U20 World Champs campaign on Saturday versus Mexico while the United States of America challenge World No. 2 Brazil on the second competition day of the 2013 FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship.
Bulgaria coach Dimo Tonev said: “My team is very young so it was a very strong performance today. The first match is always very important in terms of psychological pressure. I think my team played well and with passion tonight. The main key to win were strong serves and good organization at the net.”
Bulgaria captain Simona Dimitrova: “Our team played with pleasure and emotions. We acted focused. It helps a lot to win the first match of a tournament.”
USA coach Rodney Wilde: “I think Bulgaria was a very strong team today. Our reception was not as good as it should be so we will work on it. We will have to pass and serve better. I am sure my team can play much better than today.”
USA captain Jordan Burgess: “We did not serve and pass well today. We will prepare better for the tomorrow’s match against Brazil. We are a good team and we will fight for it.”
