Today, they would perhaps be the most spectacular volleyball team that this world has ever seen. But, we will probably never have that privilege to watch them play together. They will remain just a myth...

Just imagine – Wilfredo Leon, Osmany Juantorena, Yoandy Leal, Robertlandy Simon, Leonardo Leyva, Raydel Hierrezuelo, Oreol Camejo All of them in the same team. Playing together. They would not need a libero. They would play total volleyball.

Unfortunately, that volleyball dream will probably just stay a dream, despite the fact that those players are all coming from the same country. Cuba.

Most of them will not play for their country ever again. The reason is well known. At some point in the past they wanted to go abroad, to play in the top leagues around the world and to earn more money. They were not allowed to do that, so they had to pay the ultimate price – To abandon their country. Players like Leon, Juantorena, Leal and others had to make a two-year pause in their careers in order to play outside Cuba and to accept the fact that they would probably never again wear the jersey of their country. They simply had to live with that.

Cuba vs. Brazil (2010)

The last time Cuba had their star players on some major volleyball competition was back in 2010 at the World Championship in Italy. Simon, Leal and the boys reached the big final, but lost the game against Brazil. Some of them stayed with the team until 2012 when Cuba won the bronze medal in the World League. Then, everything fell apart.

Instead of having one of the most spectacular teams that this world has ever seen, Cuba stayed without their volleyball children. They are spread around the world, considering to accept the call of some other national team. Osmany Juantorena has already played for Italy, Yoandy Leal has received Brazilian citizenship, Wilfredo Leon is on the verge of playing for Poland…

But, one thing will never change. Cuba will forever stay their home…
