It was actually the very first Cypriot derby in the history of the European Cups with the result being somehow not the top priority.
“The result of the game is not as important as the speedy liberation of our town and the return to our homes” says the Team Manager of Anorthosis, Makis Kontos, as he did welcome the Supervisor of the game, Georgios Stefanidis – himself a refugee from Famagusta – and the international referees (Vladimir Simonovic of Serbia and Igli Feshti of Albania) during the technical meeting.
And the teams deviated from the official match protocol to take a common group picture with all 24 players, plus coaches and officials, around the Mayor of Famagusta, Alexis Galanos, to commemorate this unique moment.
Just for the records, Nea Salamina came back from one set down to win the match with the score of 3:1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23).
