The German national volleyball team is making waves at the Olympic qualifiers in Brazil, on the brink of securing a berth for the Paris 2024 Olympics. As they aim for victory on the global stage, back home in Germany, there’s another reason for volleyball fans to rejoice.
Berlin Recycling Volleys, the titans of German volleyball, have unveiled their newest recruit: Tobias Krick, the country’s acclaimed middle blocker, currently showcasing his prowess at the Olympic Qualifiers in Rio de Janeiro. Krick, who has committed to a three-year stint with BR Volleys, is slated to don the team’s jersey next season, reinforcing their middle blocker position.
Krick, 24, boasting an imposing stature at 2.13 meters, has represented the German national team 116 times. His inclusion is a strategic move by the reigning German champions, Berlin Recycling Volleys, as they brace for a grueling season spanning three competitions.
Kaweh Niroomand, the Managing Director, elucidated the decision. “Given the jam-packed 23/24 season, it’s imperative to have tactical flexibility, which Krick brings to the table. While our middle blockers have represented national teams and will require periodic rests, Krick’s addition ensures we have four outstanding players, each offering a unique skill set.”
Despite lucrative offers from Italy and Poland, Krick opted for the Volleyball Bundesliga, echoing his comfort with the German league and rapport with Niroomand. His choice led to a three-year partnership, with Krick also being recognized for his extensive social media influence, amassing a staggering 5 million followers on TikTok alone – a figure that rivals top soccer stars from Bayern Munich.
However, beyond social media fame, Krick’s professional journey reveals resilience. After spending five pivotal years (2015-2020) with the United Volleys Frankfurt, he ventured overseas (Italy 2020-2023). Challenges such as recurrent back issues marred his stints abroad, but now in prime form, Krick remains a cornerstone for the German team at summer tournaments.
