The reigning Polish champions, Jastrzębski Węgiel, started the new season of PlusLiga on a winning note, defeating the host team Stal Nysa in straight sets. However, it was not an easy victory, especially in the second set, which saw a prolonged battle with the hosts giving Jastrzębski Węgiel quite a challenge.
There have been significant changes in the lineup of the current Polish champions. From the championship-winning team, as many as eight players departed. The most notable departures include two French players: Stephen Boyer and Trevor Clevenot. They have now joined league rivals from Rzeszów and Zawiercie respectively. To fill their shoes, Jastrzębski Węgiel recruited another Frenchman, Jean Patry (the starting opposite in French national team), and Croatian outside hitter Marko Sedlacek.
