The German runners-up Friedrichshafen showed that a win against Turkish giants Halkbank Ankara in the opening round of this season’s Champions League was far from being lucky or a short-term flash. The team coached by the Belgian mastermind Vital Heynen swept Finnish titleholders VaLePa by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-15) not giving the slightest chance to the hosts to hope to win in front of the packed stands at Energia Areena Vantaa. The reception of Friedrichshafen players was nearly flawless as they made team 66% with two players being all over the floor – libero Markus Steuerwald (83%) and outside hitter David Sossenheimer (79%). The Greek international Athanasios Protopsaltis was the best scorer in Friedrichshafen with 15 points. Urpo Sivula noted 15 points for VaLePa.
The Polish bronze medalists Jastrzębski Węgiel ran over runners-up from France, Spacer’s Toulouse VB, at home by a 3-0 thanks to 20 points (4 aces) from the Cuban Salvador Hidalgo Oliva. The Brazilian Bruno Temponi Araújo scored 11 points for Toulouse. With this win, Jastrzębski reached a perfect 2-0 record in the tournament.
