EXCLUSIVE FOR WOV: Maestro from Curitiba – Felipe Fonteles

One of the most colorful and most interesting careers started in Banespa, Brazil, before eleven years. Felipe Fonteles grew to became symbol of reliability and power in modern volleyball. After short episode in Brazil he moved to Modena where he spent most of his career (four seasons). In the summer of 2007 he went all across the World to Panasonic Panters in Japan.

His travelling and changing not just clubs but nations too is what marked his career. Two years after signing in Japan he returned to Europe, to Greece and helped Olympiacos to win the national Championship. But that wasn’t enough to keep him in place and year after he returned to his homeland. Then two seasons later project of powerful Zaksa brought him back in Europe. He and Zagumny led Zaksa to final four of CEV Champions League in a fantastic season. That was enough for Fenerbahce to recognize that savior of the struggling team is exactly Felipe.

Now he earned place in Rezende’s squad at a Grand Champions Cup and is shooting for all the trophies with the still undefeated Fenerbahce team.

You left Brazil as a very young player, was that a good choice?

I always try to make the best decision for me and my family. I have played in the top teams all over the world, so I can say it was certainly a good choice. It made me learn from the best players and best coaches ever there are.”

Including Brazil you have played in six different countries, which is your favorite?

“Each of them were special in a different way, of course, but I have a special place in my heart for Poland. Maybe because Volleyball there is their passion, and I love what they do for this sport and how they took me in their league. It was really amazing.”

You are off to an amazing start in Fenerbahce, can we expect trophies?

“I always play to win, so yes, Fenerbahçe fans can expect trophies!

You have earned an invitation to national team, what does that mean to you?

”A big honor and joy! It is amazing to play for one nation, receive all their support and see that they really believe you can make them happy. It’s also the pleasure to play at the best level there is to play.”

Who will win the Grand Champions Cup?

“As I said before, I only play to win, so you will always hear from me that my team will win. But clearly we have big challenge ahead, especialy with Russia.”

Imagine that volleyball doesn’t exist, what would be your occupation?

“Businessman, actualy it is what I will do after my sports career reaches an end.”

What do you think about WorldofVolley?

“In my opinion it is on it’s way to become the best site about volleyball, with all it’s interaction with the fans and also players. It is completely different from what I’ve ever seen! Accurate and fast information for volleyball lovers, and also making the user connected to the site with all those nice attractions like post your picture with your idol and stuff like this! Congratulations and keep up the good work!”
