One of the most promising Women’s volleyball players in the Philippines, Jovelyn Gonzaga, is in the spotlight in her country due to fact she made a huge sacrifice for the national team.

A 25-year-old Foton Tornadoes opposite hitter decided to quit the Philippine Army in order to join the tryouts for the volleyball national team. Ultimately, it paid her off as Gonzaga was chosen to be part of the wide list of 25 players announced by head coach Francis Vicente. Now, she will have to fight to be part of 12-women squad for the 29th Southeast Asian Games and the AVC Asian Senior Women’s Championship. There are three more players on her position among the list of 25: Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Alyja ‘Jaja’ Santiago and Kim Dy.

Before finding her name on Vicente’s wide list, Gonzaga was admitted for an eight-month military training in Capas, Tarlac and was on a crossroad – to start military career or to join volleyball national team.

“I still have a chance to serve my country by playing the sport I really love,” Gonzaga decided.
