All three encounters on the last, third day of the 1st Round of the 2021 CEV men’s Champions League were decisive for the progression to the next stage.
Pool B hosts C.S.M. Arcada Galați qualified to the 2nd Round through a dramatic five-setter against Finland’s Ford Levoranta Sastamala. The Romanian side saved no less than five match balls before winning the tie-break: 3-2 (28-26, 18-25, 25-13, 23-25, 20-18). The Dutchman Niels Klapwijk led Arcada with 25 points, while Moldovan Vasile Talpă made as many as 8 blocks. Croatian Filip Šestan made 87 % reception (40 % excellent).
In a decisive Pool C match for the promotion to the 2nd round, the hosts Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated the Dutch side Draisma Dynamo Apeldoorn in straight sets and thus moved to the next stage of the competition. What marked the match, apart from the win of the Polish team, is the fact that its head coach Luke Reynolds gave the chance to a 15-year-old libero Maksymilian Granieczny to feel the “gunpowder” of the Champions League. The attendee of the youth team came in at the finish of the third set.
Hungary’s Fino Kaposvár VC repeated a perfect play against Erzeni Shijakut from yesterday and swept Albanian rivals once again to advance to the 2nd Round from Pool A in Zagreb (Croatia).
